Through some prodding and arm twisting I have jumped in to the traditinal archery arena. It has always been there as I enjoy those wonderful hand built custom long bows and recurves. Just wonderful. Having a friend who is a fanatic doesn't help any. The final straw was a few weeks back when Pat and I where pursuing turkeys and while I of course was encoumbered with a very fine Beretta Mdl. 410E 12 ga double, Pat carried a favored Long bow. One area we hunted was archery only so when reading for ...

Oil Finish

Sunday started as a lazy day of not much to do but sleep in, Big breakfast and maybe a trip to the range. First I check in online and the wheels of the days plans fell of quickly. Jb posted pictures of his 3 300wby's with newly done oil finished stocks. Now I am no stranger to Oil and have been thinking that my A303 needs a good oil finish as well. One email leads to another and JB and Myself find ourselves, abiet 2000 miles apart, stripping stocks for oil finishes. Here is todays progress;

The rifle on the left is my recently completed Mark V Deluxe project which involved stripping off the polyurethane coating, re-checkering the stock, and applying many layers of oil finish. The center rifle is my refinished Euromark that I acquired from BighornWby. The one on the right is my refinished Classicmark II that I bought from KingCobraTx.

The girls are all chambered in the .300 Weatherby.

A decent .300

This is the former JB Accumark in .300wby. The original B&C stock is now on KCTx's 416 "Swamp Thing". This was a truly ugly stock off of eBay. Bad finish and a hacked up barrel channel. I opened the channel for the #3 barrel and straightened up as best as possible. I stripped the gloss finish and had the checkering redone. I installed a London Guns red pad. It has a 3 step oil finish using the WartHog kit.

The barrel will be blackened and proper sights installed.

I have just finished a book titled, "Too Close to the Sun", the Audacoius Life and Times of Denys Finch-Hatton. It was a very good informational read. Not so much a hunting novel but a more of a life and times book. Finch-Hatton was of English landed gentry class of the between the war era. He started as a restless (probably quite spoiled as well) boy and grew into a young man with a wild wondering spirit. Service in WWII added to his restless being. He later became the companion/lover of Karen ...

I just won a very fine wool deer stalkers cap on eBay. It is of a tan/cream plaid the name/pattern of which I don't know the name of, but will be fun to investigate. It will replace a very decrepited Wales made Tartan pattern one of I currently have. It was made by the esteemed firm of Herbert Johnson of Bond Street. Bond Street on less. Same block ( 38 vs. 98 ) as Holland and Holland.

I want to shoot 300 gr SMK's and all indications are it will push them to 2800 + muzzle velocity with ease. That will keep the bullet supersonic out to 2000 yards. So here is what I am getting.

Here Here is a photo of my Ultra Light Arms .30 gov't '06. It came from a dear friend in a swap. She bought it new in 1990. It has been all over the west and to South Africa where it harvested a 28yr old Giraffe. Since that time it has been labelled Ms. Sue's Giraffe gun. As she was relocating to NW Montana she came to the realisation that even with a brake it just plain kicked too much. Through some negotiating I swapped her a set up Kimber Montana in .260 for this now cherished rifle. She had ...

Make Your Gun Feel Longer

Did you know that you can make your side-by-side feel longer than it really is? Maybe I discovered this out of necessity since I was never able to afford a bespoke gun until I bought my Merkel. If the length of pull on your SxS is, say, up to an inch too short, you can improve the feel by extending your forehand further along the barrels so that most, but not all, of your leading hand is grasping the barrels, while a small portion of the forend is left to fill the gap created by the cupping of ...

As much as it pains me to come to this realization, I may have to put the Classicmark II up for sale. It has nothing to do with the quality of the rifle because it's one of my favorite all-time Weatherby configurations. The wood on it is very nice and I love the shadowline cheekpiece. Even by lengthening the stock, it just does not feel right to me. The pistol grip is much too shallow and I always find myself with my little finger and the ring finger with nothing to grab onto, so I have to ...

Here is a step by step photo sequence of a replacement recoil pad installation. This is a factory Weatherby DeLuxe stock that is being fitted with a London Guns pad. These pads are best quality english style rifle pads that can be use as finished or later to be leather covered, very much like the old classic Silver's or Hawkin's pads.

Belle's tail was slapping the floor downstairs as she stood next to the hunting gear I had laying in the laundry room. Her nose was pulling remnants of last week's hunt from the air that drifted out of the gamebag. "Let's go Belle!" I've never seen a desire to hunt birds as strong as that possessed by Belle matched by the keenest sense of pheasant behaviour. When a pheasant would run, instead of following the bird as most dogs do, should would circle ahead and hold the bird until I approached. ...

For those who are interested in how doubles guns work and why they were designed the way they are, I would suggest buying the book, "The Double Shotgun" by author Don Zutz. It completely explains all aspects of side-by-sides and over unders that most people would simply glance over while handling one of these guns. After reading the book, you will have a different level of appreciation for the technical engineering involved in what appears to be the simplest of all gun designs.

This is a Blaser S-2 Luxus in .500NE. Not as "traditional" as some out there but a very exceptable rifle in a working mans price range. I like the Combi cocking lever and the Jager patent style action lock up. Should last forever without need of repinning. I like the sight arrangement on these best of any double I have handled. All have a "rib" that allows for easy, on/off, scope mounting.

I'm sure all of you have heard or read his books. I'm on my second or third go around of reading his books. For one reason or another, I think we can all find similarities between his adventures and our some of our own

If any of you haven't read his stuff, I'd be happy to forward on a couple of his books.

Only the mind of a German would come up with this. These are from the Land of Cuckoo Clocks and Merkel Shotguns. Kidding aside they are unbelievably well done rifles. Just stunning from a engineering stand point. This happend to be a Pair of matched Left hand 8 shot .375H&H's. Available from CSMC for a paltry 210,000 us.

Just wanted to share my most favorite Weatherby...it's a .378 custom Lazer/Euromark w/ iron sights. She should be good for anything I'll ever come across I'm extremely happy that I may have finally found a fairly accurate load for her...110gr of Re22 behind a 300g TSX..Shot a three-shot group that nestled together at 0.31
